Natural-stone vessel sinks

Born in the Rockies. Carved anew in Colorado.

Hand sourced in the mountains, hand carved at my shop on west Colfax, hand selected by you to adorn your space.

Elevate the mundane functionality of a 'sink' into an expressive, artistic connection with the deep past.

One stone, one mason, one sink — never two alike.

Provenance

Forged in the depths of geological time, Re-kindled and reimagined

From the first moment the first island arcs were scraped and folded onto the Wyoming province 1.8B years ago; through the rising and falling of the ancestral Rockies; bathed in the volcanism of the San Juans, and scraped clean by pliestocene ice... Colorado's story runs deep.

Wonderous are the cliffs & valleys & obscure hills I've wandered to find these unique and beautiful stones. Partnering with private land owners and mineral rights holders; I bring you exclusively sourced rocks, exquisitely carved, and without parallel.

EXCLUSIVITY · 1 OF 1

No editions, no repeats

Every sink is cut from a single stone found at an exclusive private site. There is no second run and no catalog, and no one else will ever own a sink just like yours.

GEOLOGY · 38 MA – 1.8 GA

The deep time of the Colorado Rockies

Colorado's fervent mining history and extensive geological mapping enables me to track down precise geological origins, and weave us both into the ancient narrative behind each stone.

HISTORY · FOUND, NOT QUARRIED

A provenance you can trace

Tumbled in landslides above Clear Creek, rolled from glacial moraines, picked from rock that gold-rush miners cast aside; each stone is adventurously and responsibly sourced.

Finished · ready to install

All the beauty I beheld and could coax out of these stones, functionally ready for plumbing, visually ready for stunning, installable (or shippable) today.

Xf/Ysp · Migmatite

Migmatite Xf/Ysp #004

Layered like an Oreo, and 1.8 billion years deep.

$4,700

Outspoken, deeply carved, a bold presence visually and physically, the wild 'oreo cookie' layers of this sink invite you to reach your hands in to touch the oldest version of Colorado some 1.8 billion years ago

Exposed by a huge landslide triggered by Clear Creek's relentless cutting, the original volcanic stone melted and reflowed and recrystalized 1.8B years ago, then was punctured again 400 million years later when the pink Silver Plume granite intruded

YgLP · Glacial granite

Glacial Granite YgLP #001

Glaciers scoured the outside with violence, I scratched out the interior with reverence

$2,300

Emerging from a 20,000 year nap in a rock pile nestled in a pine forest, this stone recently took an exciting ride grinding it's way down 3,000 vertical feet encased in glacial ice.

The visual textures are subtle and largely uniform, resulting from an even aphantic matrix strong enough to survive the trip down the mountain. A perfect medium to instead draw attention to the flowing curvatures of stone.

Xbq · Quartzofeldspathic mica schist

Mica Schist Xbq #001

Ancient beach sand, crushed and reborn.

$3,950

We're quite confident that Colorado spent most of the past 2 billion years on a tropical beach vacation, close to the equator, and close to sea level

Steadily accumulating thick layers of sandstones and limestones, which are not bad rocks; you see the sandstones used everywhere in flat flaky pinkish derivations as metro-Denver landscaping or layered CU-Boulder building facades, but not particularly interesting rock either

But if you bury that boring sandstone deep enough; and crush it hard enough, hot enough...

Ysp(Xm) · Pegmatitic granite

Pegmatitic Ysp(Xm) #001

Giant crystals the gold-rush miners threw away.

$7,000

The miners of Colorado's Gold rushes dreamed of deep veins of gold & silver ore, and giant crystals of valuable gems; yet they callously threw aside this spectacular stone full of massive crystaline quartz pegmatite while clearing a wagon road to a mine high on the mountains near Empire Colorado.

I've redeemed them of their folly & lack of artistic vision by recapturing and reframing the intrinsic beauty and centerpiece potential of this (very heavy) piece of Colorado's geology.

Tqm · Quartz monzonite

Iron Fen (Tqm) #03

Iron-rich spring water painted it red.

$27,000

The base stone is quartz monzonite, some of the youngest granite in Colorado. Over thousands of years, warm water rich in dissolved iron coated it a deep red. This happens in fewer than a dozen places in the world. I sealed the red outer layer in epoxy to protect it.

Only about 7–9 stones like this are within reach, and I broke the first two while learning to cut them. There will be five or six more in this series, and each one will cost more than the last.

Bookmatched pair of uncut pink Silver Plume granite

Bookmatched pink Ysp pair

$2–5K each

An altogether delightful expression of the tertiary Silver Plume granite; light pink radio-decayed pottasium dances with an almost emerald green biotite across the noble white/grey aphantic matrix in a kind of quiet uniformed restraint that is actually anything other than evenly distributed if you look closely.

It split so cleanly on my steel bore wedges and each half retained such a nice echo of the other's shape, that I decided to leave the half drill holes in for now, in case you want to play up the 'book-matched' dynamic in a jack-n-jill bathroom or some other juxtaposition.

Gold rush miners called it 'Corn Rock', for good reason; but I don't see any obvious fracture planes or discontinuities, so I should be free to carve this one as deep and/or delicate as you prefer. I'd only charge the full 5K for an extremely thin sidewall profile and 'deep scoop' shape.

Uncut blocks of layered migmatite

Uncarved Migmatite Xf/Ysp

$3–12K each

I currently have a couple thousand pounds more of this 'oreo cookie' migmatite waiting to be carved, three of which can be considered 'truly massive' in case you'd like to own one of the most outrageous sinks in the world.

If you're drawn to what I did with XfYsp#004, but want to play with the concept a bit, you have options.

Three pieces split of glacially carved granodiorite

Glacial Granodiorite Triple

$2K / 6K

An extremely clean and uniform specimen of Routt Plutonic monzogranite, this 500lb glacially deposited stone has been split into three oversize pieces. All of them are 2 feet wide, about 1 ft deep, and just under a foot tall.

They should carve nicely and resist fracturing, so I can accommodate whatever thickness or symmetries you can dream of. The surface can work rough-hewn/carved, or polished, or sealed. Polished appearance would be similar to a standard granite countertop.

The stone is a geologic sibling of the Boulder Creek Granite.

Large flat uncarved felsic gneiss

Oversized flat gneiss

$6,500

Boldly proportioned and with audacious visual colors & textures, this stone would make an outsized statement piece in a larger bathroom, or as a functional centerpiece of a wet-bar.

The angular geometries and weathered faces scream 'natural stone! not from a factory!!' so I would leave the outer edges as-is, only lightly work the lip (if at all) and carve the bowl broad and shallow with a polished finish, or an epoxy seal if the permanent 'wet' look appeals to you

Two silver plume granite stones

Silver(plume) & Gold

$1-3K each

Biotite rich and sparkly, this quartz and oligoclase rich expression of the Silver Plume granite is punctuated by oranges and silvers and shiny mica and quartzy phenocrysts

Currently split into two pieces, however this stone is quite workable and I have quite a few options for how many sinks and of what shape size to ultimately end up with here.

The exterior should be left raw or rough-hewn or permanently epoxied. Polished finishes are likely to subdue most of the interesting bits of this stone, so I'd only recommend them on the lip or the bowl, with annual light sealing required. A rough hewn finish in the bowl with permanent epoxy seal would likely be quite striking.
